You're my Point Person.

You didn't know it but you are.

Hey, thank you! You didn't know it but I was behind you most of that run. You had a pace that worked for me! So thank you! You did awesome! Great job! These are the words that I said to my point person, more on that later. It was 2018 and I had just finished the go short go long go very long run. I had signed up to do the 10k that particular year. When the run started I was very overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation. Man! What a great thing! The people, the community, the thrill of the run. All of these people together sharing one common goal. Finish!

Well for some maybe two goals, finish with a new PR. That's a personal record for you nonrunning peeps. No shade, just explaining it so you understand. So in all of this excitement as I began to settle down and get in a particular pace, one that was familiar to me, I noticed something. It wasn't hard because there were so many people. It was crowded. I noticed this one particular runner in front of me. He had yellow on so he was very visible. He was a bit older than me and you could just tell that this wasn't his first run. I then saw something or noticed something that stuck with me that day. He was moving at my pace! So what you might say! There are a lot of people that move at your pace or the same pace. What does that mean or why is that deep?

The "so what" was that I decided at that moment that was my point person. He was my guy. I was going to stay behind him, not right behind him as to not crowd the poor man but stay consistent with him. When he would walk (and yes it's ok to walk, walking counts, and walking is good) I would walk, then he would run again and I would run again. It was perfect. What does all of this mean and what is even the significance of all this you might ask yourself? Find your point person. Try to find your point person. In everyday life find your point person. At your job find your point person. In your community find your point person. Can't find them? Look harder, be intentional.

We all need someone who moves at our pace. We all need someone in our circle of people whom we can relate to and someone who just helps us be a better, kinder, more graceful human. Maybe that's someone you already know or maybe it's just someone random that you saw do something kind that encouraged you or made you just want to be better than you were the day before. So back to my point person for my run. I said thank you! You didn't know it but I was behind you for most of that run. You had a pace that worked for me. Thanks again! His reply? I'm so glad I could help. Great job!
